I know what *I* thought it was and I could hardly believe they'd write it like that. I was rater scandalized. But I dis get to read what it really was and I swear, I can't recall. I only think *wrapped up like a _--__- in the middle of the night".
Ha ha. Did look up those lyrics and I can't make a bit of sense of the entire song. Supposed to reference street racing??? Someone was really high when they wrote that.
I still love that song. I think Katie's mom and I thought the same thing for a long time. But it's revved up like deuce, another runner in the night, isn't it? There definitely was a lot of heavy drug use involved while writing it. LOL.
I heard on "Lionel's Vinyls" that it was about Springsteen's adolescence (eg. 'Indians in the summer' referred to his Little League baseball team.) I could blame his singing style for the incomprehensibility, but Manfred Mann's version was no clearer.
Remember vinyl records, ha ha? I sometimes played songs over and over trying to understand words and really, it often was not possible to catch the lyrics. I did that a lot with Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding album.

ReplyDeleteHa! Me, too, but I was a teenaged boy at the time, so it was natural...

ReplyDeleteI must have been too busy to listen to music in 1970 as I have not heard that song before, perhaps my head was stuck in the sand!
ReplyDeleteI always sing the next line and wonder what it is. Now i know it has to do with car racing. Haha
